Hermosa Beach Historical Society & Museum

Preserving Hermosa's History

The Hermosa Beach Historical Society was founded in 1987 with the mission to engage, delight, and educate the community through the presentation and exploration of history. The collection is extended to the public as a source of lifelong learning.

(La misión del Museo Histórico de Hermosa Beach es atraer, deleitar, y educar a la comunidad a través de la presentación y exploración de la historia.)

Located in the former Pier Avenue Junior High School (the present-day historic building Hermosa Beach Community Center), the HBHS renovated this space through private fundraising and opened in 2007 with the current Museum space as it exists today.

The Museum's collection of approximately 3500 items includes photographs, postcards, newspapers, prints, ephemera and three dimensional materials. The Museum uses its collection for exhibitions, educational programs, study and research, loans and reproduction.

The Hermosa Beach Historical Society hosts and facilitates many lively events with and for our South Bay community, including the annual Surfer's Walk of Fame and Volleyball Hall of Fame celebrations. The Museum also provides monthly educational programming with local figures and academics, as well as field trip opportunities for local students.

We have an engaging volunteer and docent program, where volunteers and student interns are able to work directly with our Museum staff to welcome guests and process collections.
