Volunteer

Volunteers are at the heart of the Hermosa Beach Museum. From welcoming visitors and preserving local history to supporting programs and events, our volunteers help make it possible for us to engage, delight, and educate our community every day.

  • Museum Docent

    • Description: Docents are responsible for the opening and closing of our museum during hours of operation. They greet guests, give tours to visiting groups, and answer questions. ​

    • Requirements: All docents are asked to be current donors of the HBM, and be at least 18 years of age. Due to accessibility restrictions at our location, docents must also be able to walk up a short flight of 9 stairs, reach a height of 4 feet, and read be able to read 16 pt. font. Docents must have access to a computer or smart device to sign up for shifts online. All docents must undergo a background check, complete a personnel safety training, and shadow an experienced docent for at least two shifts.

    • Availability: Docent shifts take place Wednesday through Sunday from 12 noon to 4PM, and take place in two hour slots.

  • Collections Volunteer - our collections volunteer calendar is currently full, please check back for future openings in Fall 2026

    • Description: Collections volunteers work directly with our collections related staff to complete a wide variety of tasks such as filing, photo digitizing or database logging. 

    • Requirements: Collections volunteers must be at or above 15 years of age and have the ability to work independently for periods of time on assigned projects. It is suggested that collections volunteers be able to walk up three steps, lift and carry 20 pounds, have vision in the normal range with or without correction, and be comfortable with using a computer.

    • Availability: Collections volunteer hours are available Tuesday through Friday from 10:30 AM to 5PM when staff are on site. We do not have any collection volunteer opportunities on weekends at this time.

  • Events Volunteer

    • Description: Event volunteers are emailed by staff to assist with event set up, checking guests in at the door for events, and event take down. 

    • Requirements: Event volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, be able to walk up a a short flight of 9 stairs, and be able to life and carry 20 pounds.

    • Availability: Museum events take place on weekday evenings, such as a Thursday from 6-8 PM, and occasional Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons.
