Hermosa Beach Historical Society
"To delight, illuminate, and promote lifelong learning."
The Hermosa Beach Historical Society was founded in 1987, with the mission to acquire, preserve, and interpret historical memorabilia and other materials pertaining to the history of the City of Hermosa Beach. The collection is extended to the public as a source of delight, illumination, and lifelong learning.
Located in the former wood shop and girl's locker room areas of Pier Avenue Junior High School (the present-day Hermosa Beach Community Center), the HBHS renovated this space through private fundraising and opened in 2007 with the current museum space as it exists today.
The Hermosa Beach Museum holds approximately 3500 items includes photographs, postcards, newspapers, prints, ephemera and three dimensional artifacts. The Museum uses its collection for exhibitions, educational programs, study and research, loans and reproduction.
The Hermosa Beach Historical Society hosts and facilitates many lively events with and for our South Bay community, including the annual Surfer's Walk of Fame and Volleyball Hall of Fame celebrations. The museum also provides monthly educational programming with local figures and academics, as well as field trip opportunities for local students.
We have an engaging volunteer and docent program, where volunteers and student interns are able to work directly with our museum staff to welcome guests and process collections.
