Skateboarding, Then

A Student Exhibition

by Dylan Lombardo

Now open at the Hermosa Beach Museum through Summer 2021.

The Hermosa Beach Museum is pleased to announce Skateboarding Then, an exhibition about the rise of skateboarding in Hermosa Beach and the South Bay. The presentation marks the first student led exhibition at the Hermosa Beach Museum, curated by our Museum Collections Volunteer Dylan Lombardo.

This exhibition of photographs, film, and objects welcomes back familiar decades of skateboarding. Featured are photographs from our Easy Reader Photographic Collection, objects from the private collection of Cindy Whitehead, and skateboarding film from Gerard Ravel.

Skateboarding in Hermosa Beach is a common thread amongst several generations, from the individuals in the community who pioneered the sport to today’s youth. This exhibition features a glimpse into the world that was ‘skateboarding then’.

The Life and Work of Robbi Hutas.png

Opening Saturday November 13th

In April of 2020, the South Bay suffered the tremendous loss of local artist and photographer Robbi Hutas. The HBHS is proud to be the home of his photographic and art collection, and will be installing a new temporary exhibition with Robbi's work that is scheduled to open the evening of Saturday November 13th (changed from November 4th). We hope you will join us to celebrate our friend, and for a moment see the South Bay through his lens again.
