Presidents Message

Thank you to all our Members, Volunteers and Guests who have enjoyed 2008 through our Historical Society, and Museum, participation. Events held this year, including the Insomniac Night, Surf Film Night, and History of Skateboarding were well received within and outside our Community.

In 2009 we will continue to provide our members and guests with regularly scheduled special focus museum exhibits, lectures, and of course our almost world famous fundraising events. We have plans in place to collaborate with our local school system to integrate Hermosa’s rich history with their existing California history curriculum.

The Historical Society Board is currently performing a search for a part time Curator, to help us with properly managing our new museum. The goals are to properly catalog, preserve, and present our collection; to put on more specialty exhibits during the year; and to expand the hours when the Museum is open to the public.

2008 has been a reminder of what a great community we are all a part of.  Yours In Service, Rick Koenig

Tax-free Donations!

Did you know the Pension Protection Act of 2006 permits donors age 70½ or older to make tax-free charitable gifts of up to $100,000 in 2008 directly from a Traditional IRA or 401k to a 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, for example, the Hermosa Beach Historical Society? This is a one-time allowance that ends 12/31/08, just in time for you to make a 2008 gift to the Historical Society. Here’s how it works: Instead of making a required IRA withdrawal and reporting it as taxable income (as is normally done after age 70 ½), you would transfer the gift directly to the charity (in this case, The Historical Society), without your handling it in-between. This way you get to make your contribution without paying income tax on the withdrawal. For more information, contact your tax consultant.

Insomniac Night II - “Artists Of”

Insomniac Poster

Please join us for our second Insomniac Coffee House inspired event -  “Artists of the Insomniac to be held early in 2009. Bob Hare, founder of the Insomniac, will discuss early artists who displayed and sold work there from 1958-1963.  Notable artists who plan to attend, and whose works will be explored and displayed, include:

Frank Holmes: Worked for four years at The Insomniac and sold paintings there, including his first painting in 1959 for forty dollars. Franks was the creator of the album cover art, and seven booklet illustrations of lyrics, for the Beach Boys Smile Album.

Bruce Houston: A sculptor known for kitschy assemblages that incorporate replicas of modern artwork with various subjects like Nefertiti, hula dancers shimmying in front of Jackson Pollack, cowboys lassoing, etc.

Lynn Joy Kroeger: “The Insomniac” lettering was done by a gal named “Tweakie” in 1958, when the club first

opened. She later designed the "Teacups" and the "Magic Castle" in Disneyland and "The Smurfs" cartoon characters. She recently passed away, but some of her work will be displayed.

Earl Newman: A graphic artist who began his career by selling posters at the Insomniac and has done the "Monterey Jazz Festival" posters for over 25 years. He captured the city's beatnik scene on canvas in the spirit of Monmartre's Toulouse-Lautrec. Several of his pieces are in the Smithsonian collection of "American Poster Art."

Earl Newman

Through the medium of silk-screen, also known as serigraphy, he has been able to reproduce designs in volume, usually 100 at a time.  It is like having 100 canvases on which to experiment, using different colors of papers and inks, varying the color blends as he goes along.  Thus, no two prints are alike. Unlike mass-produced machine prints, each silk-screen print is made step by step, each color a separate printing. Earl will attend the event and present parts of his video biography. Newman's postersfor the Insomniac are below.
